What Does 100 Gigabit Ethernet Mean?

100 gigabit Ethernet (100 GbE) is a version and series of Ethernet technologies that enables the transmission of data at a speed of 100 gigabits per second. 100 GbE is developed and maintained under the IEEE 802.3ba standard committee to provide high-speed data transfer between long distance channels and nodes.


Techopedia Explains 100 Gigabit Ethernet

100 GbE is primarily designed for direct communication between switches. It provides the highest achievable data transmission speeds and maintains support and integration with existing Ethernet technologies/interfaces. If used in copper medium, the 100 GbE can reach a distance of 10 meters, whereas in single mode fiber it can be extended to 60 miles. A 100 GbE modulation scheme involves breaking the whole bandwidth into two polarized streams, each of which is further broken down into two streams of 25 Gbps each.
